Bridging the Gap: Mia Vardouniotis on Connecting the Next Generation of Greek Professionals By Evia Vlahos
I had the pleasure of speaking with Mia Vardouniotis, the newly appointed Chair of the HHF Next Generation Committee, to learn more about her journey, her vision, and what’s ahead for the Next Generation community. We discuss events like the White Party and upcoming Young Professionals Gala, and how they’re helping shape the committee’s direction.
E: “Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first got involved with the HHF Next Generation Committee?”
M: “I first got involved in the Hellenic Heritage Foundation’s Next Generation Committee when I was in my fourth year at York University. At the time, I was the president of the Hellenic Students Association (HSA). I was finishing my undergraduate degree and thinking about how I can stay involved with the Greek community once I graduated. A family member who is involved with HHF connected me with the Chair of the NG at that time and I joined. I immediately loved the community and the initiative that was in the works.”
E: “Yeah, I’m kind of in the place you were in right now—transitioning from university into the “real world.” I was involved in the HSA in University too, and I started thinking, how do I stay connected with everyone post grad? Joining HHF Next Gen and coming out to the events feels like a perfect opportunity to do that.”
M: “Totally. I also really connected with what the organization stands for. I loved that the committee’s energy is focused on young professionals coming together, meeting like-minded individuals, and being exposed to different careers and perspectives. I thought it was such a valuable opportunity to connect and grow, both personally and professionally. Since then, I’ve seen the organization grow so much, and it’s been amazing to be part of that journey.”
E: “Yeah, I love that. For those who may not be familiar, how would you describe what the Next Generation Committee does?”
M: “The Next Gen Committee is all about connecting young Greek professionals with a goal of promoting Hellenism in our community. We aim to unite young Greek professionals through a variety of opportunities and experiences, whether it’s networking events, social gatherings, or collaborations with other Greek organizations like The Hellenic Initiative.”
E: “Amazing. I wanted to congratulate you on becoming the new chair. That’s very exciting. What are some of your goals and priorities now that you’re in this new position?”
M: “I’d say I have three main goals for the NG Committee. First, I want to continue the momentum we’ve built by bringing in new members and fresh ideas. I’d say on average, I’ve
been connecting with one new member a week, and it’s amazing to see friends of friends, cousins, and colleagues joining and helping grow this community.
Second, I want to focus on bridging the gap between university students and the broader Hellenic Heritage community—not just through professional networking, but also social opportunities. That’s where events like the White Party and the upcoming Young Professionals Gala come in. These gatherings give young Greek professionals a chance to connect, socialize, and collaborate across organizations.
Finally, I want to preserve and also spread our Hellenic heritage with the younger generation. This means maintaining the cultural roots passed down by our grandparents and parents, while also creating opportunities for those who haven’t been involved and want to become involved and learn about their heritage.”
E: “Wow, yeah, I love that. The committee seems to be in good hands with you as the new chair. You mentioned the End of Summer White Party, which was a huge success. It blended fun, style, and networking. Can you tell us a bit about the planning process and how it helps shape your approach to future events?”
M: “Within the Next Generation Committee, we have subcommittees that handle the hands-on planning. We make the bigger decisions together as a group, and then the subcommittees take care of the details. As leader of the social committee last year, I had high hopes for this event to become a staple that everyone looks forward to every year. This year we introduced the theme ‘The White Party”.
The White Party was also designed to tease our vision for next year’s gala, which we’re hoping will carry the same white theme. Once we toured Toronto Beach Club, we knew it was the perfect venue for the atmosphere we wanted.
From there, it was all about spreading the word and encouraging people to come out, meet new people, and get involved. One of the most rewarding parts was seeing so many new face and how many people reached out afterward wanting to join the committee. That meant a lot. It showed that our work resonates with people and that these events are connecting with people with one another. It really showed us the value of what we’re building.”
E: “Yeah, I really liked the theme. I went to the White Party with some friends, and we were saying it felt a little like Gossip Girl haha. Everyone dressed in white, the atmosphere, the venue
— it all had that elevated, stylish vibe that makes events extra fun.”
M: “And it reminds us of Greece, right? It kind of brings back some nostalgia from home.”
E: “Yeah, I love that. Are there any upcoming projects or events that you’re particularly excited about?”
