On Saturday, October 9th the Hellenic Heritage Foundation hosted an intimate fundraising event to officially launch our newest major project initiative – the HHF Greek Canadian Archives.
Building on the success of the HHF Chair in Modern Greek History at York University and the newly endowed Hellenic Studies Program at the University of Toronto, the HHF Greek Canadian Archives will ensure our Hellenic culture, heritage and stories of Greek immigration to Canada, can and will be shared with future generations to come.
The HHF Greek Canadian Archives will become a key program and central resource for scholars, community organizations and the general public who share an interest in the history of Greeks in Canada. The very positive response to this project has already led to many personal collections of valuable archival materials including documents, pamphlets, newspapers, videos, photographs and interviews which can now be safely stored and digitized so these resources aren’t lost.
In an exciting announcement, York University has already committed to $1 million in support of this initiative and is also prepared to offer one new course based on the material sourced and findings made through the Archive as part of the HHF Chair in Modern Greek Studies program offering.
The HHF has committed to raising an additional $1.4 million over a five year period which will go towards supporting a permanent Program Director and support staff positions as well as the necessary funding needed for the translation, curation, storage and digitization of archival material.
If you too would like to make a financial donation in support of this project or have historical material that you would like to contribute, please submit a completed pledge form and/or contact me directly at [email protected] .
