The Hellenic Heritage Foundation invites you on a Historical Walk of the 1918 Anti-Greek Riots – (update: new date added)

The weekend of August 2, 1918 was one of the most violent in Toronto’s history. As many as 50,000 people took to city streets over three days, rioting and destroying businesses owned by Greek immigrants. Learn what happened and why these riots are largely forgotten. Visit the locations where history was made!

Free and open to all. Registration is required.  Contact our office for scheduled dates.

Tours will meet where it all began:

The site of the former White City Café, 433 Yonge Street, Toronto

What you will find there today is a Heritage Toronto plaque marking commemorating the Anti-Greek Riots, in front of the current occupant, Quest Language Studies.

We will meet at the open walkway, two stores south of the building.

For more information, call (416) 447-7107

The event will only be cancelled in the event of severe weather. If so, you will be notified by email.

These Historical Walks are part of the Hellenic Heritage Foundation’s efforts to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Anti-Greek Riots. Our initiatives include developing curriculum material for the Toronto District School Board and free documentary screenings and lectures on these events.

The Hellenic Heritage Foundation would like to sincerely thank the Clara Thomas Archives at York University, the Greek Canadian History Project and Mihalis Mouratidis for their incredible contributions of archival photos and context in the creation of this significant historical exhibit.

The Hellenic Heritage Foundation is a charitable organization committed to the advancement of Hellenic education and culture in Canada. Your gift can support these initiatives.
